Today, we celebrate World Maritime Day, and on this special occasion, we would like to highlight the theme of "MARPOL Convention 50th Anniversary - Continued". This theme gathers attention to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL Convention), which is an important legal tool for protecting the marine environment and covers various aspects of preventing ship pollution of the ocean.

Background of the MARPOL Convention

The MARPOL Convention is an important international agreement of 1969, fully known as the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, and its goal is to reduce and prevent marine pollution from ships. The importance of this convention cannot be underestimated, as the ocean is one of the most precious resources on Earth, and polluting the ocean can cause serious damage to the entire ecosystem.

Key aspects of the MARPOL Convention

The MARPOL Convention covers various types of pollution, including oil pollution, chemical pollution, garbage pollution, and ship wastewater discharge. It establishes strict standards and rules that require ships to take measures during operations to minimize adverse impacts on the marine environment. In addition, the convention also stipulates additional protection measures for specific regions (such as polar regions) to better protect these fragile ecosystems.

Collaborative cooperation

SIOETC is a governing unit of the International Organization for Oil Spill Control (ISCO) and a member of the International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMRF), celebrating World Maritime Day together.

SIOETC's commitment to HSE, health, safety, and environmental protection in the field of marine engineering continues to promote and develop marine technology and culture globally.

The International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMRF) is a charitable and public welfare non-governmental international organization aimed at preventing loss of life, promoting water safety, and providing disaster relief in both maritime and inland waters worldwide. Its mission is to promote international cooperation, information exchange, research and development, and advisory services among maritime search and rescue institutions around the world, and to encourage and promote the establishment and development of maritime search and rescue services in various countries around the world; Promote and enhance public education and awareness of water safety.

move on

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the MARPOL Convention, we should review past achievements, but more importantly, we should continue to move forward. Protecting the marine environment is a long-term and sustained mission that requires joint global efforts. Governments, shipping companies, crew members, and marine research institutions all play important roles in jointly implementing the provisions of the MARPOL Convention.
